LB Council to Decide on Bike Registration The Long Beach City Council is slated to take a final vote on bike
registration reform at its Feb. 15 council meeting at the Long Beach City Hall.
In Long Beach it is illegal to ride a bike without registering it
with the city. This law is burdensome and creates an extra level
of bureaucracy for Long Beach residents and bike enthusiasts.
Additionally, a vast majority of bike owners in our city do not have
their bikes registered and are therefore subject to tickets and fines.
The new registration program includes plans to partner with
local bike shops and access to online bike registration programs. The
program also promises to have a stronger focus on bike education, to
ensure that both cyclists and motorists are respecting the rules of the
road.
The need for bike registration reform was apparent on Oct. 29,
when squad cars, helicopters and motorcycle police showed up near
Cal State Long Beach during a critical mass bike ride that was stopped
short of its commence due to registration issues.
