DCA Gets $100,000 Award
LOS ANGELES - The National Endowment for the Arts awarded $100,000 to the Arts City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs for the Mayors Institute on City Design 25th Anniversary Initiative and announced 21 grants throughout the country totaling $3 million.
From $25,000 to $250,000 and are awarded to 21 communities ranging from Easton, Pa. to Los Angeles. The Mayors Institute projects take isolated neighborhoods or neglected waterfronts and use the arts to change that environment.
The Department of Cultural Affairs is planning to develop a Broadway Arts Center, a mixed-use center offering affordable artists’ housing, a performance or exhibition space, an educational facility and a creative commercial center located in the historic Broadway Theater District of downtown Los Angeles with the grant money.
The site currently comprises underutilized commercial properties. A minimum of 100 units of affordable housing will be available for artists. CalArts expects to serve an about 200 students a year with the new educational facility. The project will serve about 5,000 artists.
Vladovic Appointed VP Of La Education Board
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education appointed Dr. Richard Vladovic, July 13, as its vice president.
Vladovic will be responsible for conducting all regular board meetings in President Monica García’s absence. He also will be chairman special board meetings and take necessary action on time-sensitive matters that cannot wait for regular meetings.
Vladovic has social studies at Stephen White Junior High School in Carson, served as principal at four schools that faced special challenges including Angel’s Gate Continuation High School in San Pedro and Locke High School in South Central Los Angeles. He also has been an administrator in the LAUSD Narbonne-San Pedro Cluster, working closely with school and district personnel. In July 2000, Vladovic was selected to head newly-formed Local District K, made up of 72 schools serving about 70,000 children. In 2003, Vladovic was named superintendent for the West Covina Unified School District.
In July 2007, he was elected to the LAUSD Board of Education, where he represents District 7, which spans from Jefferson High School south to San Pedro, as well as the independent cities of Lomita, Gardena and Carson.
“I am honored to work with Board García and the rest of the board members as vice president,” said Vladovic in a statement.
“Together we will strive to promote a comprehensive agenda that directly benefits LAUSD students and continue to work hard to ensure children receive a quality education.”
