POLA, POLB Clerks Strike

SAN PEDRO – Several Los Angeles and Long Beach port terminals shut down, July 1, in the Harbor, supporting the collective bargaining efforts and contract negotiations of the Office Clerical Unit of the International Longshore Warehouse Union – Local 63A, which went on strike.

Clerical workers handle critical transport documents such as export bookings for shippers and terminal operators.

The union unit struck at four terminals after its labor contracts with 14 shippers and terminal operators expired.

However, three terminals remained opened, such as Han Jin, Evergreen, Seaside Transport, and Yang Ming Terminal as well as Matson Terminal in Long Beach are still working.

Longshore workers were set to walkout in support of the clerks, but due to a binding arbitration agreement, they had to return to work.

Sources said that, on June 30,shippers and operators rejected a proposal calling for a 21 percent wage increase within three years from the clerical union.

The expired contract allegedly provided the clerical workers with $96,900 average yearly salary, full medical coverage, 21 paid holidays and 13 sick days and four weeks of vacation per year.

Shippers supposedly countered with a proposal that includes a 10 percent increase in monthly pension payments and protection from layoffs.

However, union members also are concerned about outsourcing, because shippers want to use new software that would allow customers to access booking data.
