L.A. Harbor Commission Meeting


The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners is hosting a special meeting, at 11 a.m. June 17, at Banning’s Landing Community Center in Wilmington.

The board is slated to vote on a grant application for Southern California Marine Institute in San Pedro, and Clean Truck Program issues such the early commitment and efficiency incentive program, authorization to negotiate a department-wide project labor agreement and a Cabrillo Way Marina short-term operating agreement with Westrec Marina Management Inc.<

The commission also will be discussing anticipated litigation in a closed session with regards to Gambol Industries Inc., the American Trucking Association and the City of Los Angeles.

Taking the City Clerk Out of the Equation


The Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council is expected to vote to end the Los Angeles city clerk’s authority with regard to neighborhood council elections and investigate a new process of designing election procedures, during its 6:30 p.m. meeting June 21, at the Cabrillo Marina Community Building in San Pedro.

Goldman Sachs to Launch 10,000 Small Businesses Initiative


Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced, June 14, that the city would join the Goldman Sachs Group Inc. 10,000 Small Businesses Initiative.

Villaraigosa’s office stated that the initiative has the potential to create jobs by providing $20 million in small business loans and by subsidizing business education. The program will offer business and management education, access to capital and business support services.

The program is designed for owners of small with limited financial resources, and with few opportunities to otherwise access a business education designed to enhance small business success. Broad characteristics of business owners targeted to participate include, but are not limited to: business revenues between $150,000 and $4 million in 2009; business in operation for at least two years; at least four employees; operations in economically under-served areas; and a business model that could scale to create more jobs.

The program is slated to begin in Los Angeles in August. Interested small businesses should apply for the education portion directly through the local community colleges and economic development centers in Los Angeles at www.lacc10ksb.com and in Long Beach at www.lbcc.edu/10000smallbusinesses.
