POLA Banners Approved

The Los Angeles City Council adopted, but subject to reconsideration, a proposal sponsored by Councilwoman Janice Hahn to install street banners identifying the Port of Los Angeles.

The street banner program would be in effect from June 1 through Nov. 22.

COMMUNITY & FAMILY

Free L.A. County Preschools Seek Students

The L.A. County Office of Education Head Start Program is now accepting applications to fill a select number of student slots in a free quality preschool program for families with limited incomes. Applications are being accepted for children from infancy to age four, including those with disabilities, as well as pregnant women. Preschools are located throughout L.A. County, including the South Bay.

Members of the San Diego-based Millennia Consort will take the to stage from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. June 4, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manhattan Beach.

POLA Host Wilmington Marinas Planning Study Workshop

The Port of Los Angeles is hosting a community workshop, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 5, at the Wilmington Recreation Center Multipurpose Room to garner community input and participation for a land use and infrastructure planning study for the Wilmington Marina area.

The Wilmington Marinas Planning Study will recommend public infrastructure improvements to the marina area, and present a conceptual land use plan for a 33-acre site adjacent to the marinas on Anchorage Road to the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners.

The workshop is the first in a series of three community gatherings.  A second workshop is slated later in the summer followed by a final workshop in the fall, which will focus on a preferred conceptual plan.

Harbor College Collegiate Choir presents Club Cabaret

The Harbor College Collegiate Choir will sing musical selections from Broadway musicals South Pacific, Bye, Bye, Birdie, and Oliver among other songs in a fundraising concert at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. June 5. Proceeds will benefit the choral music program of the LAHC Music Department. Tickets are $10 at the door or from any choir member

World Ocean Day

SOIL Garden Gala Haiti Benefit

Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods presents a June 5 evening gala and silent auction benefiting the Shada-Haiti Children’s Medical Clinic. The gala will take place at 5 p.m. in a tuscan style garden in Rolling Hills Estates with food, wine, live music and dance. Tickets are $75 per person ($85 at door).

Building a Farm

Long Beach recently announced the construction of the first urban educational farm in the city.

The New City Farm, which will be operated by New City Schools will be a working farm that will add green space to the community and provide exciting, hands-on educational opportunities to students and community members. The Farm comes out of a partnership between the Long Beach Housing Development Company and the New City School.

The New City Farm will include vegetable gardens, a variety of fruit trees, an outdoor classroom with classes on gardening and healthy living, a chicken barn for raising chickens and growing eggs, a working windmill and a store that will sell fruits and vegetables grown at the farm.

Produce will be bought and sold on site and community residents will be able to work on the farm and enjoy this natural sanctuary in the heart of an urban environment.

The Farm build day will be on June 10, and volunteers are needed.
