Los Angeles – Martin Bautista, a former California Employment Development Department employee, was sentenced, April 26, to 30 months in federal prison.
Bautista, 40, was ordered to pay full restitution for a scheme that bilked the state more than $30,000 in issuance of fraudulent unemployment benefit checks issuance of unemployment benefit checks.
Bautista's co-defendant, Francisco Gomez also was sentenced to 30
months in prison.
Earlier this year, Bautista pleaded guilty to charges of mail fraud and aggravated identity theft, and admitted that he took over the unemployment insurance accounts of multiple victims while employed at the EDD's Riverside office.
As part of the scheme, Bautista caused EDD to issue more than $30,000 in checks for unemployment beneficiaries whose names were similar to Bautista's and Gomez's.
