A recent report compiled by the compiled by the Department of Public Health’s Office of Women’s Health and Office of Health Assessment and Epidemiology shows large disparities in health, risks and preventable diseases among different groups of women.
The Health Indicators for Women in Los Angeles County: Highlighting Disparities by Ethnicity and Poverty Level reported that women of African descent have the poorest health and other racial and ethnic groups bear disproportionate risk factors and diseases. It also shows that women have unique health care needs reflective of their complex and challenging socioeconomic status and biological makeup.
The report also focuses on issues unique to women 65 years and older, women with a disability, women with different sexual orientations and the effect of insurance status on women’s health.
The report found, among other conclusions, that women of African descent have far higher mortality rates from many chronic diseases; Latinas report the poorest self-rated health status among all ethnic groups, about 40 percent with disproportionate death rates from diabetes (31 per 100,000compared to 21 per 100,000 for all women in Los Angeles County); Asian/Pacific Islander women report low rates of preventive services and having a regular source of care; women living in households less than 100 percent of the federal poverty level are four times more likely to report fair or poor health status; forty percent of women 65 years and older report living with a disability; and about 25 percent of women 65 years and older living in households with income less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level report being food insecure.
