The Avon Foundation for women recently awarded a $60,000 one-year grant to the YWCA of the Harbor Area and South Bay to increase awareness for the early detection of breast cancer.
The YWCA must use the money to educate Harbor and South Bay area women and refer them to low-cost or free mammograms and clinical exams in their communities. The YWCA’s ENCOREplus Program will coordinate screening days with other agencies using their mobile unit where needed. The program will also provide childcare, transportation, translation and emotional support for participants at no cost.
Breast cancer education will be available in English and Spanish, providing advocacy, navigation and support services. The programs will provide women with a “buddy” system if they are diagnosed with breast cancer. The "buddy" accompanies women to their appointments.
