Thirteen-year-old Noah Thomas Akers died Feb. 1, after choking on a hot dog during a fundraising contest at the Boys & Girls Club of San Pedro.
The Jan. 28 to raise funds for people impacted by the recent earthquake in Haiti. Noah, a Dana Middle School student, was among about 120 children who paid $1 to participate in the charity games, which included a dance, tug of war, musical chair and hot dog-eating contest.
The latter challenged children to eat a hot dog with whipped cream in a bun without time or amount requirements. Those who ate the conjecture would receive a candy as prize. Noah was one of 13 children to participate in the game.
However, Noah suddenly began to choke on the hot dog. Although a Boys & Girls Club staff member tried performing the Heimlich maneuver on the child, it wasn’t until paramedics arrived that they were able to remove the food using long tools.
Noah was taken to the hospital alive but the he’d gone without oxygen for too long and died after being removed from life support four days from the day of the incident.
Investigators said that the children seemed to be properly supervised and that the death seemed accidental. Club management said they took all the steps necessary and that their staff was properly trained.
