Angels Gate Cultural Center recently announced that its letter writing campaign, which called on the San Pedro community to pull out their pens and papers to let local politicians, specifically Council President Eric Garcetti, Councilwoman Janice Hahn and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, about the importance of the services it provides, was a success.
More than 5,000 letters were generated to Los Angeles City Council members from stakeholders. A number of arts organizations around the city stepped up and mobilized existing networks. An additional 100 advocates attended a recent city council meeting, including Deborah Lewis, Angels Gate’s executive director and its visual arts director, Marshall Astor.
The campaign was in response to the recent threat to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs through budget and staff cuts.
Staff reductions of 24 to 48 percent and the elimination of the annual $2.2 million in grants that the department awards were proposed, including grants that have been awarded for the rest of this year and have not been invoiced.
The decision means that grants we awarded for 2010 to Angels Gate will be upheld and it will continue to host exhibitions in its galleries and promote other arts programs for the community.
Five Los Angeles council members also introduced a motion to remove the city ordinance that guarantees 1 percent of the "hotel bed tax" for the department's budget, a move that might eliminate any obligation to fund the department. The motion to remove was put into file placed on a backburner.
