Erroll Southers, who in September was nominated by President Barack Obama to become the assistant secretary for the Transportation Administration, recently announced he would not maintain his consideration for the post.
Southers, a former FBI agent and a current assistant chief for homeland security and intelligence for the Los Angeles World Airports Police Department, said he refused to remain part of the dialogue, citing an unacceptable partisan climate.
Sen. Jim DeMint, a Republican from South Carolina, had blocked his nomination because he worried Southers would allow TSA employees to have collective bargaining rights.
TSA employees can join a union but are not allowed to collectively bargain. DeMint and other Republicans said bargaining rights might pose a threat to airport security.
Other Republicans opposed his nomination reacting to reports about a late 80s incident involving a background check of his ex-wife’s boyfriend. Southers allegedly misled Congress about incidents in which he inappropriately accessed a federal database.
His consideration withdraws comes at a time when lawmakers are pressured to find new leadership for the administration in the aftermath of recent airline bombing attempts. In the meanwhile, Gale Rossides continues her work as the acting administrator for TSA and no names have been released as to who may take on the permanent position.
“Fortunately, the acting TSA administrator is very able and we have a solid team of professionals at TSA doing vital national security to keep us safe,” said White House spokesman Nick Shapiro, in an e-mail to Random Lengths News without mentioning possible nominees as requested.
