Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced the appointment of Robert Ovrom, Tuesday, Dec. 22, as the new general manger of the Department of Building and Safety.
Ovrom is charged with streamlining city services and improve support of the Los Angeles business community, while stimulating job creation and protecting public safety. The 12-2 Program, which streamlines the City’s entitlement and permitting process from 12 departments down to two, will be one of his major duties to promote economic development and growth.
He will focus on $17 billion worth of private construction that began with Villaraigosa’s first term in office to ensure the project were completed.
The new manager has been working as deputy mayor of economic development within the department since July 2005, where he’s overseen the departments of planning, housing, community development, community redevelopment, the Port of Los Angeles, building and safety, and the housing authority.
The appointment must now go to the Los Angeles City Council for their consideration and appointment confirmation.
“Supporting these projects that are in the pipeline and streamlining in government process to promote more, is about one thing – job creation,” said Ovrom in a statement released by the mayor’s office. “As a ‘bricks and mortar’ guy, supporting construction always has been my favorite part of my job and I will continue this effort by leading the department to support economic development in Los Angeles.”
