The South Coast Air Quality Management District is advising community members that it has received a permit application to install an emergency internal combustion engine near 4th and Palos Verdes Streets in San Pedro.
The project may be positioned about 1,000 feet from POLA High School.
The engine will burn diesel fuel to drive an electrical generator that will supply power in case of an electrical emergency and is not expected to emit more than .27 pounds of carbon monoxide on a 30-day average or less. Using worse case scenarios, AQMD found that health impacts are well below its rule’s toxic thresholds hazard index, meaning very young children and the elderly will not experience adverse health impacts, according to health experts.
AQMD has determined that the equipment will meet all applicable air quality requirements.
