Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa urged the California Legislature, Dec. 8, to pass education reforms needed to make the state eligible for the up to $700 million Race to the Top federal funds.
The State Assembly began debates Tuesday on several legislation pieces that touch on the Race to the Top funding, which the state is not eligible at this time.
The Obama Administration has slated more than $4 billion of competitive grants through the Race to the Top funds to encourage and reward states that are creating conditions for education innovation and reform.
Villaraigosa wants state lawmakers an education code that removes caps on the number of charter schools and shuts down failing charter schools, improves the student progress data tracking to evaluate teacher performance and institute efficient plans for low performing schools that empower parents.
I strongly urge our state leaders to be hold and pass meaningful education reform to give Gov. Schwarzenegger a bill he can side, said Villaraigosa in on op-ed recently published in the Sacramento Bee. The Obama Administration has set high standards. Money will not be awarded and rightly so unless states show they are on the path to reform. Our task is clear.
