Jeffrey Tidus, an attorney with Baute & Tidus LLP in downtown Los Angeles, was fatally shot Monday evening at his driveway in Rolling Estates.
Reports stated that neighbors saw Tidus returning from a social event and come out of his home to retrieve his laptop computer from his car but they didn’t hear any shots. His wife, Sheryl, reportedly heard a single gunshot and ran outside, where she found him collapsed behind his Toyota Prius.
Detectives said the incident happened at about 8:33 p.m. on the 4600 block of Sugarhill Drive, a wealthy neighborhood in the Harbor Area.
Tidus was pronounced dead at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8 at Torrance Memorial Hospital.
The Baute & Tidus has declined comments to the press, but the firm’s Web site described Tidus as versatile civil lawyer, who also had an active practice as an arbitrator and mediator. Some of his clients included Hawthorne Savings, New Century Financial, Thales Navigation, Isuzu Motors of America, California Federal Savings, Aames Financial, First Alliance Mortgage Company, First Los Angeles Bank and Tokai Bank.
Curry v. Dean Witter Reynolds, a case where Tidus defended attorney who handled paperwork for promoters of numerous real estate partnership deals; Hawthorne Savings v. Reliance Insurance Co., where he tried a directors and officers insurance coverage dispute to a jury, awarding the total amount of the disputed claim plaintiff, $950,000; and Opdyke v. Boinus, where he obtained the return of the life story rights to elderly Holocaust heroine who had signed a long term deal for her life story rights for the price of one dollar, were among the successful cases he litigated.
No arrests have been made and have not determined a suspect. Investigators have yet to classify the shooting death.
“It is a death investigation,” said Deputy Aura Sierra of the Los Angeles Sheriffs’ Department. “The specifics are still unknown because it is still par of an ongoing case … Information has not come out. It will come out at a later time but as of today, we still don’t have that information.”
