United Teachers Los Angeles responded to a Nov. 13 letter sent to the Los Angeles Unified School District union presidents and employees by Superintendent Ramon C. Cortines demanding furlough days and a 12 percent reduction in the 2010-11 school year.

The union expressed discontent about circumventing the bargaining table. UTLA members stated that talks between the union and the school district must include the presentation of LAUSD’s financial records, information about programs and purchases in the face of fiscal crisis and justification for a Dec. 3 deadline, which UTLA considers unreasonable because it gives the union less than three weeks to bargain on the issue.

Among some of the expenditures UTLA seeks scrutiny on is the Response to Intervention program, the District periodic assessments and preparation costs, and the operation of mini-offices.
UTLA currently is trying to work with the district to schedule a date to negotiate on the furlough and pay cut issues.
