On Thursday Nov. 5, students and staff of South Shores Elementary School received a $5,000 gift package courtesy of Port Medical of Long Beach and the ILWU Local 13. The donation is intended to help the school pay for the purchase and installation of all-new playground equipment for its students.
“The ILWU has a long history of giving back to the community,” explained Local 13 president George Lujan. “When the community comes to us, we do our best to help. Collaborating with Chris Rice, David Gomez, and Sergio Amador, as well as the entire Port Medical family has been a pleasant experience.”
Paul Suzuki, Principal of South Shores Elementary, said that the school has been considering replacing the school’s playground for quite some time. “The playground was built at the same time as the elementary school in 1959. This renovation has been a long time coming.” Currently, the school playground is equipped with two sets of monkey bars, and a horizontal flip bar.
The principal hopes to raise a total of $25,000 from parents and other outside sources by the end of the year. “The amount would be enough to break ground, repave, pay for and install an all-new playground for our students,” said Suzuki.
Port Medical vice president, Michelle Aragon, hopes to inspire other local businesses to help South Shores raise the necessary funds. “My daughter Ava has even donated $100 from her piggy bank to help out the school. We hope that with Port Medical’s donation, and the ILWU’s support, other local businesses will come forward and contribute what they can. We hope that such generosity is contagious.”
There will be a fundraiser on Nov. 21 at Sixth Street Bistro to raise additional funds for the Elementary School.
