On July 18, the San Pedro Arts, Culture, and Entertainment District (A.C.E.) launched its first ever Art Walk+ Studio Tour, where local artists opened up their galleries and studios to art lovers. Among the galleries featuring cutting edge artists, included Jay McCafferty’s “Transvagrance;” Ann Mitchell’s “American Triptych” at Gallery 478; and Gallery Azul, featuring the Jonathan Bueno’s Macholandia exhibit at Gallery Azule.
Different from the already popular First Thursday art walk, visitors were led on a map-guided tour getting an up close and personal look at the artist’s work.
Ron Linden, primary organizer of the Studio Art Walk, noted that people tend to buy art in pricier areas of Los Angeles, often overlooking the wide array of quality visual art available in downtown San Pedro. The Art Walk+ Studio Tour aims to educate attendees on the broad array of visual art produced right here in San Pedro.
“The arts community does this because they believe in what they’re doing and the benefits of having a lively cultural community,” Linden explained. “The only way it
works is if it’s interesting enough that people want to become part of it.”
