On July 16, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder was in San Pedro to announce the first grant – for $500,000 – to Volunteers of America of Los Angeles in support of SHAWL House, a shelter that houses about a dozen beds and drug rehab programs for women who are homeless or victims of domestic violence. The women live at the shelter for six months - longer than most such programs. The funds were granted from the American Recovery Act stimulus package.
Due to the economy and the State’s own financial trouble, government funding has shriveled alongside private donations. SHAWL House competed against many other shelters for the $500,000 grant, which will be spread over three years. Click here to see footage of the question and answer period after Atty Gen. Holder's remarks.
