Grand Annex will be staging the second in a series of Japanese Fusion
music programs on Saturday October 18 featuring the Kotoyuki Band with
Yukiko Matsuyama. Ms. Matsuyama, whose compositions of original Koto
music blends the traditional with contemporary pop and jazz idioms, is
a unique world music sound.
Born in Osaka, Japan, she attended the Ikuta School of Koto, where she received her certification and teaching credential in playing the Koto in 1986. The Koto - the national instrument of Japan - is a large six-foot long hollowed zither/harp like instrument that has 13 strings that are plucked. She will be holding a workshop at the Grand Annex at 5pm and then a full performance at 8pm with the Kotoyuki Band. Price is $15 in advance and $17 at the door. The workshop is $10.
The following day on October 19, at 7pm, contemporary bluegrass artists Cliff Wagner and Old Number 7 returns to their home turf for a show at the Grand Annex. Triple Chicken Foot will be providing some southern fried honky tonk music as the opening act. Cliff has been busy playing since last year’s shows here in San Pedro. You might have seen him on the Fox network program, “The Next Great American Band,” or his recent return at the John Anson Ford amphitheater in Hollywood. He has been all over Southern California supporting his new CD, “Hobo’s Lullaby,” which really should be the roots music/Americana album of the year. You can purchase all his CDs at the show. Cliff will be autographing them afterward. Presale tickets are $15.
The Grand Annex is located at 434 W.6th Street in Downtown San Pedro.
If you are out late on Saturday October 18 head to Hollywood Rivera to Zina’s to catch San Pedro’s Ron Olson, with his band the South Bay Rockers.
