Off-Duty Officer Opens Fire At Ex-Girlfriend
An off-duty Long Beach police officer was arrested Oct. 20 in Anaheim in connection with a domestic dispute and assault with a deadly weapon that occurred earlier that morning.

The Anaheim Police Department reported that 26-year old Orlando Mendez and his ex-girlfriend were driving separate vehicles when they encountered each other at an intersection and a dispute broke out between them. Mendez fired several shots into his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle, but she and her female passengers were not hit.
Mendez, an Anaheim resident, waited for police at the scene and identified himself as a member of the LBPD. Officers arrested Mendez on suspicion of aggravated assault, brandishing a firearm, discharging a firearm from a vehicle and corporal injury on a spouse. He was booked at the Anaheim Detention Center on $50,000 bail, which he posted the following day.
Mendez had been a sworn Long Beach police officer for six months and was a probationary employee. Upon notification of his arrest, the Police Department immediately initiated an administrative review of the incident and served him with a probationary dismissal, terminating his employment.

LBPD Shoot Man Off Balcony
On Oct. 19, Long Beach police officers responded to a residence in the 4800 block of East Anaheim Street regarding a domestic disturbance involving a man with a gun who was possibly suicidal.  Officers attempted to negotiate with the 28-year-old man holding a handgun on his balcony. A woman was also on the balcony. After a half hour of negotiations, the involved officers shot the man in the upper body, claiming the man posed an immediate threat to the woman, whose relationship to the suspect has not been divulged.
The suspect was taken into custody and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The names of the man and woman have not been released to protect the identity of a possible domestic abuse victim. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office investigates all officer involved shootings and is conducting an independent investigation of this incident. The names of the involved officers have not been released.
