Random Lengths News had the opportunity to visit with San Pedro’s own Ambrosia last Saturday just before their return to the South Bay at Hermosa’s new music venue Saint Rocke. This sextet is filled with stellar musicians including three of the original members of Ambrosia, Christopher North on Keyboards, Joe Puerta on Bass, and Burleigh Drummond on Drums.

(Guitarist David Pack is no longer performing with Ambrosia, but is active producing and playing with other artists such as Michael McDonald.)

We asked Joe Puerta, bassist for the group, a few questions about what they have been up to since last year’s performance at the Lobster Festival, which the band headlined.

RLN: How does it feel to be back in the South Bay again?

JP: It is always great to be back here, as some people may know I moved to Milwaukee about 15 years ago. I have not spent that much time out here. Until recently I have been spending half my year in Milwaukee and half in San Pedro.

RLN: Where have you guys been since last years Lobster Festival?

JP: All around the country, into Canada, one fun gig we did last year we are going to do again is St. Martin, in the Caribbean. Every now and then you get these bonus gigs where [you] get to spend a week on an island, and then play one show. Occasionally we get over to the Philippines and places like that –– mainly it is the U.S.
RLN: Are there any new projects in the future for Ambrosia?

JP: We are going to be doing a couple of new songs tonight. The problem is that Burleigh (Drummond, the band’s percussionist) has a studio here and I have one in Milwaukee you would think we could get something done between the two of us but between traveling and getting everyone in the same town at the same time, it hasn’t happened yet. It used to be a lot easier when [we] all lived in the same house. We would get up in the morning and rehearse, now trying to get everyone together is like herding kittens, we are going to have something.

I did a Christmas recording with some guys out in Milwaukee a couple of years ago, we did a single and it went out on all the oldies stations and became number one in the country under my name Joe Puerta. That particular group and I got to together last year and put together an album called “Christmas Dreams” it was available last year here in San Pedro at “Drop In Gifts” on 6th street. It was a great album we had eleven tunes, nine of which were original, then we arranged two classics for this project. As we get closer to Christmas, I will be putting together a live show to go with that.

Everyone else has been staying busy and living life and staying active. (Burleigh Drummond has a group and a production company in the San Fernando Valley called Tin Drum and is very busy with his music. As are the other members of the group who are working as studio musicians.)

RLN: Is there anything you want to say to your fan’s in the Harbor?

JP: It is always great to come home, my mom still lives in Harbor City; it is great to see my sister and all my friends that are here in San Pedro, it is still home for me.
