ACE Features - Random Notes of the Music Writer Dude
Written by B. Noel Barr
Monday, 08 September 2008
Lobster Fest is coming to San Pedro with an exciting line up of musical acts to perform the entire weekend of September 19-20-21. On Sunday September 21, at 12:30 pm, Andy Hill & Renee Safier will be performing with their band ‘Hard Rain‘. The group will be performing a Tribute to Bob Dylan with a full hour set of Dylan’s songs. Andy and Renee have recorded nine CDs, one of which is their highly acclaimed Dylan tribute, “It Takes A Lot To Laugh,” produced by Springsteen sideman Marty Rifkin. The couple has toured internationally doing originals as well as covers of the little man from Minnesota (Dylan).

They have played the music festivals from Telluride to Nappa Valley, sharing the stage with John Mayer and Bruce Hornsby at Telluride, to Michelle Shocked, at the Bob Dylan Festival in Italy. Their latest CD also produced by Rifkin titled, “Hurricane Of The Heart,” is a collection of Americana, folk and rock, performing their originals and covers of such song writing stars as Patty Griffin and Mark Knopfler. Their band ‘Hard Rain’ backs them on this collection and put in a stellar performance. The title song is a story of post Katrina and the aftermath in New Orleans, great work by local artists from the South Bay.

You will be able to pick up a copy of the CD at the Lobster Festival, or can contact them at www.myspace.com/andyhillmusic or at www.andyandrenee.com.

Tickets for the Lobster Fest are $8 at the gate, children 12 and under are free. You can go to the Lobster Fest web site to get a discount coupon worth $2 or for more information go to www.lobsterfest.com.

Phil Christie “Rearview Mirror” is a collection of some of the most well crafted songs this writer has heard since the hey day of the Brill building––the home of songwriters working out of New York. These are the kind of songs that made the careers of Neil Diamond & Carol King possible. With a Voice that reminded me of several different people at once Gordon Lightfoot, but more like Harry Chapin, with a dash of Neil Diamond. This voice is of a kind that has not been heard in years, a full smooth voice that yowe need is the desire to help one anotherwith unrequited love.

For information on this CD or to find out more of this artist go to www.philchristie.com, or you can see him on September13 at 7:00 pm in the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 North Lake Street, Altadena, 91001 or call (626) 398-7917.

Il Faye, who put on an exciting evening of rock at the First Thursday, “Night of Music” back about three months ago, will be playing at Taco Beach at 211 Pine Ave, Long Beach. The group is playing Sept. 15. Call (562)983-1337 for information.
