The original Radio Café was across the street from Pan Pacific Cannery
on Terminal Island, and provided meals for cannery workers. Domenick
Sardisco started at Radio Café in 1956, after immigrating from Grisi, a
small town outside of Palermo in Sicily. When the cannery expanded and
the café disappeared, Domenick moved the business to Carson, to a
converted warehouse next to the railroad tracks. Local freight trains
would hold up traffic as the train crews waited for pizza at the rail
takeout window in the back, built at just the right height for a
locomotive.
Avalon Boulevard is still the location of the restaurant, though trains pass by without benefit of pizza now. Domenick’s is legendary in the Carson area for that excellent pizza, pasta and sandwiches. Old man Domenick passed his knowledge and passion for authentic Italian food to his son Domenick Junior, known by the old timers as “Toots.” His son Tony and daughter Theresa carry on the tradition in Carson and on Western Ave. in Rancho Palos Verdes. The DWP missed the trick when they did not press Theresa Sardisco into action to solve the energy crisis– this beautiful ball of fire could light up most of San Pedro and part of T.I. just standing still. She has been in the news lately for her support of pet rescue and the new Harbor area animal shelter in San Pedro. Her enthusiasm for her grandfather’s legacy in the restaurant business shows in her radiant smile and gracious manner, greeting customers and friends at the Western Ave. dining room.
Domenick’s special pizza is the perfect example of what pizza should be about – hand made crust, stretched to ideal thinness, topped with the best ingredients – mushrooms, sausage, pepperoni, black olives, green peppers and onions, blessed with cheese, and then served bubbling hot from the pizza oven – bliss! Standard pizza topping selections are available, but the unusual combinations are fascinating, and tasty. Try a tuna and cheese pizza (a Terminal Island special) or chicken with onions, fresh tomato and basil, and cheese on that splendid crust. Experience is obvious in Domenick’s pizza crust – over 50 years of care shows in the texture, taste and crunch.
Twelve-inch sandwiches are brimming with lovely fillings, from the traditional submarine with a variety of Italian cold cuts to the “Godfather” with roast beef, ham and cheese, served with home made potato salad. The burgers are a wonderful surprise in an Italian restaurant, with the “Mussolini” burger (green peppers, onions, mushrooms and cheese) and the “Dago” burger (tomato, lettuce, onion and pickle) heading the list. An old country style filling of egg, pepper and onion sandwich seems to speak of Sicily, and makes a very satisfying snack. A steak sandwich with French fries and a cold one on tap sounds like a happy solution to Saturday lunch.
Italian dinners will suit every appetite; spaghetti with sauce from a family recipe almost a hundred years old, or old fashioned lasagna, or linguine with clams, or traditional manicotti stuffed with cheese. Rich fettuccini alfredo is served with chicken and peas, both colorful and delicious. Broccoli and mostaccioli with garlic and olive oil is a wonderful taste of Sicily on a plate.
Domenick’s on Western Ave. has the best deal in town on the first Friday and Saturday of each month. A special prime rib dinner is served with pasta, garlic bread and salad. This perfectly roasted piece of tender prime rib would please even the most devoted carnivore –each serving is a full four pounds of Harris Ranch beef, known for flavorful meat. Fred Flintstone would not look amiss at this impressive serving of protein. The prime rib special has been on the menu for over 20 years, an inside secret to San Pedro residents, and an excellent bargain at $32.95. Domenick’s Pizza 28360 S. Western Ave. Rancho Palos Verdes.
