In towns across America, in living rooms and garages, ground zero for the new epoch of rock is exploding. In places like San Pedro, California, there are dozens and dozens of bands with musical chops that are devastatingly amazing. However, in this port town there are a large number of metal and punk bands, Going from one particular idiom to another is all part of the process, it goes back as far as human history when man first sang his first songs and beat on stones and logs to make a rhythm.
It was a hot night in the harbor town of San Pedro, one of the local watering holes, The San Pedro Brewing Company, was presenting another local legend called Brimful. This band played with a feeling of exuberant confidence in front of the hometown crowd. Filled with some family, friends and other musicians from the harbor area, the set was an all too brief 45 minutes. But what a set! This metal edged band with a strong sense for the melodic took the capacity crowd to a rocking frenzy that no wanted to see end.
Brimful was one of the featured bands in the “Pedropalloza” show at the Whisky on February 21, 2008. Born in the mid 1990’s during a phase of music when metal was peaking in California and where Long Beach Radio Station KNAC ruled the air waves for a brief moment in time, (Now the preeminent source for all that is metal on the net at KNAC.com).
The band Brimful returned to its original line up with guitarist Rick Sysak who’s playing as both lead and rhythm and his unique tunings make for a full and vibrant sound. Such bands as Iron Maiden and Anthrax influenced him. Returning to the band is Matt “Boomar” Bommarito, a very exciting drummer who puts the show and passion of his art on the line each time he plays. “Boomar” seems to tap in into the playing style of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, but admits his influences were much more the ninety’s icons like Metallica, Bad Religion and the death metal bands that caught his interest early on, like San Pedro’s Mike Lane of Detriment. On bass guitar, is Evan Holt also lead vocalist, a charismatic front man to the band who is able to capture the positive energy of the band and articulate the passion that is Brimful.
According to longstanding original member Evan Holt, the name Brimful came from the dictionary meaning to fill a beer mug but grew to mean much more. He explained, “We looked up in the dictionary it made sense not in a literal way, but filling to the top or over the top. Drummer Matt Bommarito added, “We were kids thinking we’re filling the beer mug up to the top, but as we got older it just meant all those things that rise to the top.”
The origins of Brimful go back to three friends who played ball in the street and wrestled with an older brother. “I used to flip these little guys over my shoulder when they would gang up to wrestle me down,” said Jeff Lisca older brother to Rick “Sturdy” Sysak guitarist and of Brimful. Jeff who played in San Pedro bands back in the 90’s said, “One night while my band Dark Monday was playing the Whisky (famed West Hollywood night club), I was watching them in the audience. What seems to me like three months later I was looking up at them on that same stage!”
Random Lengths News went to their San Pedro studio and asked the band about what kind of music it is that they do. Rick Sysak answered, “That is a good question,” Matt Bommarito interjected “its rock and roll, look around the room these are the bands that really matter to us.” We could gaze around the studio and see the banners and posters of icons like Ozzy Osborne - Metallica - Zeppelin, with smatterings of a pin up here and there. Matt went to say, “You can call the music death metal, alternative, Indie whatever, it is all rock and roll, that is what we do.”
When asked about where they thought Brimful would be in five years, Boomar replied, “We are a successful working band touring and playing concerts around the world.” It reminded us of John Lennon and what he'd ask his band when they were coming up. Lennon was quoted as saying, “Where are you going boys?” “To the top of the poppermost Johnny!” the rest of the Beatles would reply.
Random Lengths News witnessed this mindset at Brimful’s show at the Brewing Company and at their rehearsal a few days later. These are three young men with a desire to succeed at all costs. They have the talent and the wherewithal to pull it off we sincerely believe they do. |
