In regard to Howard Uller’s article “Setting the Record Straight,” in your last edition (Vol. XXIX No. 13, RL June 27-July 10), I wish the same Hahn puppets would stop trying to make excuses for Janice Hahn. First of all, Howard Uller writing a letter in defense of Janice Hahn is like ex-New York Governor Eliot Spitzer writing a letter in defense of Heidi Fleiss. Mr. Uller was in charge of the program that funded the largest of the gang intervention scandals, $1.5 million to Hector Marroquin (who is now in prison). Mr. Uller defending Janice further proves the depth of her corruption. Why does she still refuse to answer the questions posed by Fox 11 News in their TV piece or by me in the June edition of San Pedro Magazine? Mr. Uller’s article also looks like a (not so) clever attempt to change the conversation by the councilwoman.
This issue is not about Anthony Santich, the Chamber of Commerce, Fox 11 News or Toberman, but I am sure the councilwoman would like it to be. This is about a politician who is interested in doing anything to further an unaccomplished political career that is defined in San Pedro by an alligator, a wasteful and useless Welcome Park, a waterfront development project that at the current pace of 1000 feet in seven years will take over 300 years to complete, an exodus of jobs and cargo from our docks that is more about her personal political agenda than the economy, and this gang program funding scandal.
The worst part of Janice Hahn’s nefarious activities is that the good work of honest gang intervention programs and the tremendous efforts of the people who are really trying to make a difference has been tarnished. The shame of Ms. Hahn’s gross misuse of these programs, besides the millions of dollars in lost funding that could have helped deserving people, is the jeopardy she has put the entire gang prevention program in.
Now, in her latest attempt of political trickery, she is introducing a ballot measure to tax homeowners to pay to fund more anti-gang programs. How ironic that since the Mayor has taken control of all anti-gang program money from the city council in light of the horrible misuse of these funds, the most notorious council member on the issue of misuse of these anti-gang funds is proposing a tax on homeowners to replenish her personal gang slush fund. That is even more laughable than when Janice Hahn stated she is “on the mind of gang members” when they are arrested because of the work of her father and herself in the community. It is a sad day when a politician will damage (and in some cases cause the elimination of) an effective program that is helping the community for her own selfish political promotions.
This was not, as Janice Hahn continues to say, “the desperate attempts by criminal gang members to say anything to stay out of prison,” rather Mr. Uller’s article was another desperate attempt by the councilwoman to avoid explaining her actions.
