Overwhelmingly, muslims worldwide are sick of terrorist hooligans. Even radical clerics are denouncing them as false jihadists. Despite this incredibly good news, right-wingers like stolid John Bolton go on beating the drums for war. They repeat, ad nauseum, “it’s a dangerous world!” Even George Will loves to cut up arguments with this oily old saw. And, they’ve got a scary World War II analogy! Iraq was Nazi Germany, if you recall. Now, it’s Iran. Folks like Bolton omit the CIA-engineered coup of Iran’s peaceful, secular democracy in the 1950s. They skip the U.S.’s installation of a dictator, the Shah. They leave out Iran’s help when U.S. forces invaded Afghanistan. They neglect that Iran, like Iraq, is predominantly Shiite and thus would love to see them stay in power. Bolton insists that Iran’s guys are foaming at the mouth for America’s demise, and the collapse of the West. But are America’s guys, at least those like Bolton, really just foaming at the mouth for bombing runs over Iran? With the World War II analogy wearing thin, Bolton wants us to believe in a Cold War analogy. In “Obama the Naďve,” LA Times June 5, Bolton invites us into a Middle Earth fantasy in which assertive negotiation only invites endless asymmetrical warfare. Obama noted Iran’s military budget, one-percent of ours, and stressed negotiation. It worked with Libya. And it was working with Iraq! “Subversion, guerilla warfare, sabotage and propaganda,” Bolton insists, make this another Cold War. Really? A pan-Islamic jihad, when muslims everywhere are sick to death of it? Are these right-wing warmongers nuts-and-bolts realists? Or Bolton nuts?
