A charity event raising awareness & money for musician’s health care.
On Labor Day weekend, the most significant players in the alternative music scene will gather for a three-day event at Safari Sams. Singer/songwriter Dave Alvin and friends are putting this event together to raise cancer awareness and money for Duane Jarvis, Candye Kane and Drac Conley, who are suffering from the deadly disease. Most musicians are really working class people who make just enough to get by, if they are playing everyday it usually is not enough to cover a catastrophic illness’ like cancer. |

It was a warm day with a slight breeze on this late afternoon at “The
Taste in San Pedro,” when local rockabilly band, Seatbelt and the
Pecking Order, took the stage. They played with exuberant abandon in
front of the near packed crowd at Point Fermin Park August 3. The
antics of guitarist Scott McLean played classic rockabilly drenched in
reverb, driven by his rhythm cohorts, Drummer Dirk Vandenberg and
Bassist Jim Matkovich, turning the show into a pirates’ version of
American Bandstand. It was a nice break in the stream of golden oldies
sets that were being zealously performed by the other groups during the
day.

Since we are talking about Rockabilly, Brophy Dale from Long Beach, who has been a featured contributor to Guitar player magazine last fall. He plays not only with his group “The Brophy Dale Band” but is also a part of “Stray Cat” bassist Lee Rocker’s Band. The Brophy Dale Band is playing this Friday August 8 at the Blue Dog Tavern in Long Beach. Then on the 14th at Café Boogaloo in Hermosa Beach. Here is a chance to hear one of the tastiest guitar slingers in the area… You can pick up his latest CD, Night Hawking, while you are at the show or on www.cd baby.com , or for more info go to www.myspace.com/brophydaleban |

Over the weekend in a series of conversations, the obvious became apparent, even to the L.A. Times. They—The Times—observed that VH-1 was reinventing the classic rock format by having somewhat younger bands approach and perform the older “Classic Rock” material, breathing new life into this style of rock. Ideally, this exposure would bring younger bands into the picture doing new original rock music. You don’t have to look very far to find bands doing rock music. They didn’t stop just because the pundits of change stopped listening. |
