Christine Rodriguez is too young to remember San Pedro’s legendary women’s boxing coach Dee Knuckles.  Rodriguez’ intense desire to box brought her to the Broadway Gym in South Central L.A. where she traded home cooked meals for training sessions with old time coach Bill Slayton. Slayton told her, “You are too pretty and smart to box. Use your good cooking and open a restaurant!”

Think Again!
Kashi Aghilipour is busy making magic happen a third time as plans for Think Prime call for opening in time for the fall and winter holidays. Think Prime will feature prime steaks and seafood, a piano bar and sophisticated but relaxed ambiance. Think Prime takes over the old Tasman Sea on Western Avenue in Rancho Palos Verdes. As we await the new opening, it’s a perfect time to reflect on Kashi’s other “brainchildren” —Think Bistro and Think Café—both of which offer a refreshing change from the every day.

The original Radio Café was across the street from Pan Pacific Cannery on Terminal Island, and provided meals for cannery workers. Domenick Sardisco started at Radio Café in 1956, after immigrating from Grisi, a small town outside of Palermo in Sicily. When the cannery expanded and the café disappeared, Domenick moved the business to Carson, to a converted warehouse next to the railroad tracks. Local freight trains would hold up traffic as the train crews waited for pizza at the rail takeout window in the back, built at just the right height for a locomotive.

World War II in Europe had repercussions all over the globe for years after, and San Pedro was no exception. The Croatian community was subject to a public misconception of things “foreign,” and battled to overcome prejudice. The Dalmatian American Club has presented a seafood luncheon every other month since 1960, promoting the community and its allegiance and devotion to the U.S. The original group of fishermen and local businessmen began the gathering 48 years ago, and now their grandchildren are preserving the tradition.
