Dori Caymmi at Alvas
Dori, the son of Dorival Caymmi and Stella Maris and brother of Nana and Danilo Caymmi, studied piano, guitar and music theory since childhood. His professional debut happened when he accompanied sister Nana on a concert. His main influence comes from his father, João Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. In the 1960s, he became a producer, arranger and musical director. His career as a songwriter stood out in that same period, when he had songs interpreted by MPB-4 (“Cantigo”), Nana Caymmi (“Saveiros,” with Nelson Motta) and Elis Regina (“O Cantador,” with Nelson Motta) in festivals. In the 1970s, he wrote music scores for movies and television shows, and in the 80s he turned toward the international market, settling in Los Angeles. Dori’s peculiar way of playing the guitar, with unconventional tunings and creative harmonies, has helped projecting his career outside of Brazil.

Take part in a Carole King tribute, Aug. 5, at Alvas Showroom in San Pedro.
With a wealth of classic songs to her credit it was only a matter of time before someone was going to pay tribute to one of the greatest singer songwriters of our time. Carole King has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She wrote several Top Ten hits for various groups with her partner and husband Gerry Goffin during the ’60s and in 1971, her Tapestry album became the top-selling pop solo album ever and held that position until Michael Jackson’s Thriller in 1982.

Jeannie Austin, having been a fan of Carole’s for many years, captures the bluesy and soulful quality of King’s voice and piano playing perfectly. She has assembled a band of seasoned musicians to accompany her in this venture and they replicate the material with disciplined accuracy. Tapestry will perform hits like “It’s Too Late”, “Natural Woman”, “I Feel the Earth Move”, “Sweet Seasons,” “So Far Away,” “Locomotion,” “You’ve Got a Friend” and many, many more.
